Uttarakhand: Every adventure enthusiast’s favourite destination

Land of pristine natural beauty and spirituality, Uttarakhand, a Himalayan state in North India, is known for its Hindu pilgrimage sites and mesmerising views of the Himalayas as well as displays true cultural spirit which respects nature. Dr. Himanshu Talwar pens an enriching travelogue on this beautiful state -

March 16, 2023

Travelers can begin their journey in Haridwar, the world’s spiritual capital. Located where the holy river Ganga enters the Indo-Gangetic plains; the city is dotted with temples, ashrams, and narrow lanes. Millions of disciples visit Haridwar to take a dip in the sacred Ganges. The highlight of Haridwar is the famous Ganga Aarti held at the HarkiPauriGhat every evening. The city also hosts the KumbhMela every twelve years, while the KanwarMela is hosted here every year. Besides, Haridwar is also known worldwide for Ayurveda, meditation, and yoga.

A few miles from the city, located in the foothills of the Himalayas along the confluence of the Ganga and Chandrabhaga Rivers, is the town of Rishikesh, which is a small pilgrimage town in Uttarakhand but is famous across the globe due to its spiritual influence. Rishikesh is blessed with ancient temples and is also considered one of the holiest places for Hindus.

Following the Beatles’ visit in the 1960s, the ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi has been a popular attraction in Rishikesh. Other numerous ashrams are in the area practicing spirituality, yoga, meditation, Ayurveda etc. Besides, it is also popularly known for its adventure activities, such as trekking in the Himalayan region, white-water rafting, bungee jumping, mountain biking, and camping along the swiftly flowing Holy Ganges.

After spending time in the spiritual towns, you may wish to travel to Dehradun, the administrative capital of Uttarakhand.Located at an altitude of 1400 feet above sea level, Dehradun is the capital city of Uttarakhand. Dehradun is nestled among caves, waterfalls, and natural springs. Robber’s Cave is a popular attraction that is a natural cave surrounded by hills. Another popular spot for tourists to enjoy some scenery is Lacchiwala, where you can view a relaxing sunset around the man-made lake and the lush green surroundings as well as enjoy trekking and birdwatching.

Moving forward, you reach the town of Mussoorie, which is one of the most popular hill stations in Uttarakhand. With a backdrop of the Shivalik range of the Himalayas and the Doon Valley, Mussoorie is placed at an altitude of 7000 feet above sea level. The British remnants can be witnessed all over the city in the archaic architecture of the hotels and churches. One of the major highlights of Mussoorie is The Mall, a boulevard with eateries and shops lining it entirely. Another major highlight of the town is the ropeway to Gun Hill, the second highest peak in Mussoorie, which offers an enchanting view of the entire city as well as the surrounding Himalayan mountains. The adjoining little hill stations of Landour and Dhanaulti, laden with waterfalls, are other popular attractions located close by.

From spirituality to hill stations, you’ll reach the most famous and popular skiing destination in India: Auli, which is known for its natural beauty, glittering slopes, and breath-taking views of the snow-covered mountains. Located at 2,800 metres above sea level, it is home to the mountain ranges of Nanda Devi, Mana Parvat, and Kamat Kamet. Dotted with apple orchards, old oaks, and pine trees, Auli also offers numerous trekking activities in the hills of the Garhwal Himalayas.

This is only one side of the state; if you take the road to Haldwani to enter the state, you will pass through more beautiful towns and destinations. One such town is Nainital, which is a heavenly hill station located at the foothills of the Kumaon ranges in Uttarakhand. It experiences a pleasant climate throughout the year, which makes it a popular tourist destination. Nainital encircles the Naini Lake, a popular attraction, with Mall Road on one side and ThandiSadak on the other. The town brims with lavish colonial structures that boost the beauty of this place. There are many things to do in town, such as trekking, boating on Naini Lake, shopping, and eating delicious food on Mall Road. You can also visit the Snow View Point to enjoy some scenic views.

Uttrakhand is the best destination for a perfect weekend getaway. Each and every town and destination are incomparable to each other. It is impossible to cover the entire state in this travelogue. However, it is evident from the feedback and responses of travellers of India and foreigners, the state is blessed with mesmerizing landscapes and numerous fun activities for tourists, and therefore it easily qualifies to be every tourist’s favourite destination.
