Led by Heidi Johannesen, Managing Director of Global Markets at the Virginia Tourism Corporation, the delegation included representatives from Visit Fairfax, Luray Caverns, Visit Williamsburg, and VTC. The mission covered Mumbai and New Delhi and was facilitated by Sartha Global Marketing LLP.
During the visit, the delegation engaged in one-on-one business meetings, networking events, and media interactions, meeting more than 100 representatives from the Indian travel trade and media sectors. The initiative focused on enhancing tourism and travel connections between India and the U.S. state of Virginia.
Known for its iconic “Virginia is for Lovers” brand, Virginia showcased its diverse tourism offerings, including the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah National Park, Atlantic coastline, Chesapeake Bay, luxury accommodations, culinary experiences, and rich historical attractions.

Speaking during the mission, Heidi Johannesen highlighted Virginia’s appeal for Indian travellers, noting that the state offers a blend of outdoor adventures, cultural experiences, luxury stays, and culinary discoveries. She also emphasised the significance of promoting Virginia ahead of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
According to the Virginia Tourism Corporation, India remained one of Virginia’s most important overseas tourism markets. In 2024, Virginia welcomed more than 69,000 visitors from India who spent approximately $124 million in the state. Although visitor numbers and spending saw a slight decline in 2025, India has emerged as Virginia’s leading overseas inbound market, reflecting the growing interest among Indian travellers in the destination.
The tourism board noted that continued engagement with the Indian travel trade and media remains a key part of its strategy to further strengthen Virginia’s presence in the market and drive future visitor growth.
