As South Africa and India commemorate 30 years of diplomatic relations and democracy, South Africa’s Tourism Minister, Patricia de Lille, visited India to strengthen tourism ties between the two nations. During her visit to New Delhi, she addressed the media, outlining her vision to boost tourism by focusing on key areas such as streamlined visa processes, spiritual tourism, rural tourism, and enhanced air connectivity.
Minister de Lille emphasized the importance of direct flights between South Africa and India, stating, *“We are in talks with the Indian government and three airlines to introduce direct flights, which will significantly boost tourism. I will be engaging with Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet to highlight the benefits of direct routes for both countries.”* She further noted that these direct flights would not only benefit tourism but also enhance trade and business opportunities between the two nations.
Highlighting visa reforms, the Minister announced that South Africa has introduced electronic visas (e-visas) for Indian travelers, simplifying the application process. *“The South African government has resolved the issue of lengthy visa procedures with the introduction of e-visas. It is now much easier for Indian travelers to visit South Africa,”* she said, adding further she said “Replacing the previous e-visa system, the ETA streamlines the approval process and shortens application times, making entry to South Africa more convenient , Indian travellers will now need to submit only three essential documents reducing bureaucratic hurdles and making the process more accessible for Indian visitors.”
India remains a key market for South African tourism, and the Minister expressed optimism about reaching pre-COVID levels of Indian arrivals by the end of the year. *“In 2019, we welcomed 95,000 Indian travelers. In 2023, the number has decreased to 79,000. However, between January and September this year, 59,000 Indians have already visited South Africa, and we are optimistic about reaching close to pre-COVID levels by year-end,”* she added.
Minister de Lille also highlighted South Africa’s focus on expanding into various tourism segments. *“Our future strategy includes strengthening MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Events), along with promoting leisure, adventure tourism, sports tourism, and film tourism,”* she shared, underscoring South Africa’s diverse offerings for Indian travelers.
