Sharjah is a destination rich in history, culture, and scenic beauty. It offers a blend of historical significance and stunning landscapes, making it a must-visit for those exploring the UAE. Below are some of the most iconic landmarks to explore in the city.
Sharjah Mosque:
The largest mosque in the emirate, Sharjah Mosque, was inaugurated in 2019 after five years of construction. Spanning 185,806 square meters, it can host over 25,000 worshippers, including seating for 610 women inside. This grand structure is a symbol of faith and a must-see for its architectural beauty. Surrounded by gardens and fountains, the mosque features domes, minarets, and columns in a distinctive Islamic style. The main prayer hall is adorned with red carpeting, stained glass windows, Quranic inscriptions on the walls, and a central chandelier. The mosque complex also includes a café, gift shop, open spaces, and areas accessible to non-Muslims.
Central Souk:
Opened in 1979, the Central Souk is Sharjah’s largest and most famous market. The souk comprises two air-conditioned buildings connected by indoor footbridges and houses over 600 shops. It offers a wide range of goods, from modern watches and clothing to authentic local trinkets and souvenirs. This market is a must-visit for décor enthusiasts. The upper level features shops selling handcrafted items, regional specialties like elaborate carpets, kilims, handwoven fabrics, and arts and crafts. On the lagoon side, there is a series of stores offering authentic Bedouin jewelry, precious stones, gold, and diamonds, with artisans capable of recreating designs from just a drawing.
Rain Room:
Rain Room is a unique modern art installation created by the London and Berlin-based Random International. It offers visitors an inspiring and magical experience, having been exhibited at some of the world’s most renowned museums, including MoMA in New York and the Barbican in London. Now a permanent fixture in Sharjah, this installation allows visitors to be surrounded by water without getting wet. The Rain Room uses 2,500 liters of self-cleaning, recycled water, and trigger sensors to stop the water from falling where motion is detected. The Sharjah Art Foundation sponsors this installation, which is connected to the Sharjah Art Museum.
Al Noor Island:
Located on the northern shores of Khalid Lagoon, Al Noor Island is one of Sharjah’s top family attractions. This beautifully landscaped garden features more than 85 plant species and is adorned with modern sculptures. The island’s centerpiece is the Butterfly House, home to over 500 exotic butterflies from around the world. Additionally, the island offers a playground for children and the Literature Pavilion, a cozy and peaceful spot for relaxation or reading. Al Noor Island also hosts several art installations, including the world-renowned OVO structure.
