Organized by the Ministry of Tourism, ITM 2024 will welcome around 400 participants, including domestic and international tour operators, hoteliers, homestay owners, influencers, government officials, and opinion leaders. The event will serve as a gateway to Northeast India’s wonders, with activities such as state presentations, B2B meetings, panel discussions, cultural evenings, food demonstrations, and a Northeast Bazaar.
Participants will also embark on technical visits to iconic destinations, including Kaziranga National Park, celebrating 50 years as a National Park; Charaideo Moidam, India’s newest UNESCO World Heritage Site; Hathikuli Tea Estate; and the Orchid and Biodiversity Park.
Aligned with the Travel for LiFE initiative, ITM 2024 emphasizes sustainable tourism practices, from energy efficiency to the elimination of single-use plastics. The event underscores the commitment to preserving the unique heritage and biodiversity of the Northeast while promoting responsible tourism.
A Legacy of Promotion
Since its inception in 2013, the International Tourism Mart has been instrumental in promoting Northeast India as a must-visit destination. By rotating the event among the Northeastern states, the initiative fosters connections between local stakeholders and global markets. The 2023 edition in Shillong, Meghalaya, highlighted the region’s diverse tourism offerings, including its biodiversity and intangible heritage.
Building on this foundation, ITM 2024 aims to expand the region’s international tourism footprint, with a focus on sustainability and community empowerment.
Key Government Initiatives Driving Growth
In addition to ITM, the Ministry of Tourism has launched several initiatives to bolster Northeast India’s tourism sector:
- Swadesh Darshan 2.0: Promotes sustainable and responsible tourism with significant funding for cultural, adventure, and eco-tourism projects.
- PRASHAD Scheme: Focuses on developing pilgrimage and heritage tourism infrastructure.
- UDAN-RCS Scheme: Enhances air connectivity to underserved regions, including the Northeast, boosting accessibility and visitor numbers.
- Travel for LiFE Initiative: Launched in 2023 to encourage sustainable tourism practices among travelers and businesses.
Efforts under these programs include the development of viewpoints, heritage sites, and infrastructure, with millions allocated to ensure an enriching tourism experience while preserving the region’s unique identity.
Northeast: A Rising Star
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his vision to bring Northeast India at par with the developed regions of the country, underscoring the government’s focus on infrastructure and tourism development. With its breathtaking landscapes, rich traditions, and vibrant festivals, the region is steadily becoming a sought-after destination for global travelers.
Conclusion
As ITM 2024 unfolds, it not only promises to elevate Northeast India’s tourism to new heights but also reinforces the importance of sustainability and cultural preservation. With robust government support and international attention, the “Land of the Seven Sisters and Sikkim” is poised to captivate the world, offering unforgettable experiences that blend adventure, culture, and natural beauty.
