In a bid to bolster Indian tourism and showcase the nation’s rich spiritual heritage on an international scale, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has announced plans for a monumental addition to the holy city of Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh.
The upcoming Vrindavan Heritage Tower, set to stand an impressive 70 storeys high and towering at 210 meters, represents a significant investment of $80 million. According to Chanchalapathi Dasa, vice chairman and co-mentor of the Global Hare Krishna Movement, and senior vice president of ISKCON Bangalore, the skyscraper temple will serve as a beacon of Indian culture, drawing in visitors from around the world.
Dasa emphasized the importance of maintaining spiritual infrastructure, asserting that temples cannot remain in perpetual disrepair. He underscored the role of such grand structures in showcasing India’s spiritual legacy to foreign tourists, citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to the Indian diaspora to bring visitors to the country.
“Anybody who’s coming from any part of the world, when they’re coming to India, they’re looking for spirituality,” Dasa stated. “We must have spiritual infrastructures, religious infrastructures, which you can be proud of, to bring foreigners and show them.”
The Vrindavan Heritage Tower is envisioned not only as a place of worship but also as a hub for tourism and cultural exchange. Dasa highlighted the project’s potential to accelerate socio-economic development in the Braj region, benefiting the local community and bolstering infrastructure to accommodate the influx of tourists.
The temple complex will feature comfortable accommodation facilities, aiming to provide visitors with a home away from home experience. With plans for one of the largest parking facilities capable of accommodating 3,000 cars at a time, the project aims to cater to an estimated 20 million annual visitors to Vrindavan, a number expected to quintuple in the coming years according to Uttar Pradesh tourism estimates.
“We are creating one of the biggest parking facilities, multi-level parking, which can park 3,000 cars at a time,” Dasa explained. “Our plans are to be able to handle about 2,00,000 people every day and on festival days much higher.”
The Vrindavan Heritage Tower, with its grand architectural design and cultural significance, is poised to become a landmark destination, fostering a deeper appreciation for Indian spirituality and heritage on the global stage. As construction progresses, the project represents a testament to India’s commitment to preserving its cultural legacy while embracing modernity and progress.
