The German tourism sector is experiencing a robust revival, with Indian travellers playing a pivotal role. Visitor numbers from India have soared, reflecting a sharp 8.6% increase in overnight stays — reaching 897,841 in 2024. With an average stay of 9.6 nights, Indian tourists are not just arriving in greater numbers but are also engaging more deeply with German destinations.
Strategic Air Connectivity Fuels Growth
A key enabler of this growth has been enhanced air connectivity. Monthly flights between India and Germany surged from 241 in January 2019 to 309 by January 2025 — a remarkable 28% increase. The Lufthansa Group, Germany’s flagship airline, reaffirmed its commitment to the Indian market, now operating 64 weekly flights and introducing its premium Allegris First Class in Bengaluru — the first in Asia.
“With a legacy of over six decades in India, our expansion reflects India’s strategic value,” said a Lufthansa Group spokesperson.
India-Specific Tourism Campaigns for 2025
To further drive Indian interest, the GNTB has introduced three signature campaigns:
Romantic Germany – Designed for honeymooners and couples, this initiative highlights fairytale getaways such as river cruises in the Moselle Valley, spa retreats in the Bavarian Alps, and blooming gardens in Saxony.
Cultureland Germany – Focused on heritage seekers and art lovers, this campaign showcases the country’s 52 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, iconic museums, and the 2025 European Capital of Culture, Chemnitz.
Embrace German Nature – For eco-conscious travellers, Germany offers the Black Forest, the Wadden Sea National Park, and extensive green mobility options, including hiking and cycling routes.
“Germany ignites Indian wanderlust by offering romantic escapes and cultural deep dives,” said Romit Theophilus, Director of Marketing & Sales Office – India at GNTO. “Our focus on sustainability and authentic experiences aligns beautifully with evolving Indian travel preferences.”
A Fairytale Revival: 50 Years of the German Fairytale Route
Adding to the allure is the 50th anniversary of the German Fairytale Route. Celebrating the legacy of the Brothers Grimm, this themed journey offers interactive storytelling experiences, exclusive anniversary events, and immersive stays that bring German folklore to life.
A Warm Welcome for Indian Travellers
Germany is also streamlining visa procedures and enhancing accessibility for Indian visitors. Vegetarian and vegan-friendly dining options are on the rise, making it easier for Indian tourists to feel at home. Additionally, the scenic beauty of Germany is being promoted as an ideal backdrop for destination weddings, positioning it as a sophisticated alternative to more traditional European wedding venues.
Big Investments for a Growing Market
With Indian outbound travel expected to grow by 230% by 2027, according to Skift India, Germany is strengthening its foothold in this crucial market. The GNTB is investing €2 million in India-specific marketing campaigns for 2025, reaffirming its commitment to engaging Indian travellers across all segments — from luxury honeymooners to eco-minded explorers.
A Destination with Depth
Germany is no longer just a stopover destination — it’s a compelling standalone experience. From fairytale romance and cultural landmarks to nature retreats and modern cityscapes, the country’s diversified tourism offerings ensure there’s something for every Indian traveller.
“Germany is moving beyond conventional tourism,” said Romit. “We’re offering experiences that resonate with the Indian desire for meaningful, transformative travel.”
As 2025 unfolds, Germany is poised to be a top choice for Indian tourists — blending heartwarming hospitality, deep-rooted culture, and green consciousness like never before.
