Navigating Challenges and Embracing Growth
Reflecting on her professional journey, Shoba Rudra acknowledges that while she has received immense support from industry peers, she has also encountered biases that often plague women in leadership roles.
“There is a segment that looks at the growth of the company and makes sexist remarks like ‘too ambitious,’ ‘why do you have to do it,’ or ‘how can RARE grow?’” she shares. With time, she also faced age shaming, but rather than succumbing to negativity, she used these experiences as motivation to keep pushing forward.
Her advice to aspiring women professionals is simple yet powerful: “You need to be yourself.” She attributes her success not only to the encouragement of stalwarts in the industry but also to her own ability to rise above challenges and build herself up.
Encouraging Women Leaders in Hospitality
The hospitality industry is undergoing a transformation, with more women stepping into leadership roles. However, according to Rudra, the journey is far from complete.
“Associations need to recognize women and their contributions and include them on boards,” she emphasizes. She points out that many industry associations are still structured with a male-dominated perspective, leaving little room for female voices at decision-making levels.
Rudra believes that for true progress to be made, women must support each other rather than view one another as competitors. “There is no other way but to stand together as a unified force, as collaborators and not competitors,” she states firmly.
Paving the Way for Future Generations
Shoba Rudra’s story serves as an inspiration to women across all ages, proving that resilience and authenticity can pave the way for success. Through RARE India, she has not only built a brand rooted in sustainable and community-driven hospitality but also set an example for aspiring women professionals. As the industry moves towards a more inclusive future, her insights serve as a rallying call for women to uplift and empower one another.
With women like Rudra leading the charge, the hospitality sector is poised for a more diverse and equitable future—one where talent and dedication outweigh gender biases, and collaboration replaces competition.
