PHL has been expanding its global reach—can you share the airport’s current focus and strategic plans for strengthening connectivity between Philadelphia and India?
PHL has been actively positioning itself as a key entry point for Indian travelers to the U.S., leveraging its strategic East Coast location. While no direct flights from India currently exist, PHL is strengthening its partnerships with airlines and travel trade stakeholders to enhance connectivity via key hubs such as London, Doha, and Frankfurt. The airport’s collaboration with the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau (PHLCVB) and tourism partners also aims to highlight the demand for direct services to airlines.
Our goal is to assist airlines in their decision-making process to support this segment of the travel population that consistently connects in both directions, as well as tourists looking to spend time in the first capital city and the first UNESCO-designated city in the United States.
What trends or shifts have you observed in traveler demographics from India, and how is PHL tailoring its services to meet their needs?
Philadelphia is known as the city of education and medicine, attracting many international students from India and around the globe. The community we serve in the area comprises nearly 8.5 million people across four states: New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Our airline partners offer direct routes to Doha, London, and Frankfurt, ensuring the best customer service experience for travelers connecting to India. We are gaining momentum by utilizing our incentive package to secure additional non-stop services in the future.
The demographic of Indian travellers to Philadelphia is diverse, including business travelers, students, professionals, holidaymakers, and families visiting friends and relatives, who also contribute to the leisure segment. Philadelphia’s status as a hub for education and medicine attracts a significant number of students and families from India, while the presence of over 82 Indian companies in Pennsylvania supports business travel.
