New Zealand is renowned for its stunning landscapes, and among its natural wonders are hot pools and health spas that offer a unique and rejuvenating experience. Nestled amidst picturesque surroundings, these therapeutic havens provide a sanctuary for relaxation and well-being. The country's geothermal activity blesses it with numerous hot springs and thermal pools, enriched with minerals that can soothe aching muscles and promote healing.

July 27, 2023

Visitors can immerse themselves in the warm, mineral-rich waters, indulging in the calming sensations that seep into their bodies and minds. From geothermal hot springs in Rotorua to secluded natural pools in the wilderness, whether you seek solace in the steamy waters, indulge in a soothing spa treatment, or simply marvel at the untouched beauty, New Zealand’s hot pools and health spas promise an unforgettable and blissful escape.

Rotorua:

Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa

Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa is located on the lakefront in Rotorua city centre and is the largest spa and wellness centre in the Southern Hemisphere.  Truly a feast for the senses, Wai Ariki is inspired, curated and owned by the local iwi, Ngāti Whakaue. This unique spa and wellness experience will give you an authentic taste of manaakitanga which is the centuries-old and internationally renowned Māori concept of welcoming their manuhiri (visitors).  It provides a premium, five-star experience. Wai Ariki is a haven of relaxation and rejuvenation offering a unique blend of traditional Māori healing practices and modern wellness experiences. Visitors can indulge in the therapeutic mineral-rich hot springs, renowned for their healing properties and soothing effects.

Kerosene Creek

Kerosene Creek is a geothermally heated creek where you can bathe and relax. It is located 35 minutes south of Rotorua. Hot water surges up from a natural spring beneath the soil into the chilly waters of the creek, providing delightfully warm waters. Swimmers have stacked up small smooth rocks to form hot pools next to the 2m waterfall. Kerosene Creek is set in thick native flora and is popular with both visitors and residents, offering a unique natural bathing experience. There is no admittance fee; only be mindful to fellow bathers and take away any trash with you.

Christchurch-Canterbury:

Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa

Indulge in pure tranquillity and discover the utmost serenity at the exquisite hot pools of Hanmer Springs in New Zealand. Nature’s nurturing touch is evident as every thermal water drop is naturally heated and enriched with an array of minerals. Unwind within the velvety-smooth sulphur pools, and revel in the soothing currents and natural rock formations of gentle rapids and pools. Ease those aching muscles with the water spouts and jets or simply immerse yourself in the breathtaking alpine scenery while the world serenely passes by. You’ll find this hot spring less than two hours’ drive from both Christchurch and Kaikōura.

 He Puna Taimoana

Enjoy amazing ocean views while relaxing in one of He Puna Taimoana’s five exquisite hot pools.  In need for recovery? For absolute relaxation, cool down in the plunge pool or go into the steam room and enjoy coastal views from the sauna.

The Sunrise Soak is their most sumptuous session ever. Sunrise Soak is the ultimate in pampering and relaxation, and is ideal for a special occasion, a well-deserved indulgence, or a lovely present. Enjoy a 2-hour soak in the pools with unlimited views of the sunrise, a plush robe to wear, a complimentary mocktail to drink and an optional guided meditation designed to relax and refresh you.

Taupō:

Wairakei Terraces and Thermal Health Spa

Taupō, an outdoor adventurer’s paradise, is only an hour’s drive from Rotorua. Bathe in therapeutic waters containing silica at the Wairakei Terraces and Thermal Health Spa.The pools at Wairakei Terraces get their healing characteristics from silica terraces and geothermal water flow from 1.5 km deep, giving an unrivalled blend of geothermal and mineral water. Immerse yourself in the mineral-rich, hot thermal pools at the bottom of silica terraces and feel the silky smoothness on your skin and the warmth spread across your entire body. The water is known to help rebuild collagen, strengthen bones, and increase immunity.

Before entering the steam, walk around the silica terraces or see a Māori cultural performance.

DeBretts Spa Resort:

DeBretts Spa Resort is the ultimate all-year-round relaxation and recreation destination! From the mineral waters of the historic Taupo Hot Springs to their modern Living Waters Spa and award-winning Taupo Holiday Park, there’s something for everyone here. Inhale the fresh forest air while relaxing in these outdoor pools with bubbling hydrotherapy areas surrounded by natural flora and rich landscaping. Many spa treatments are available on-site to help you recover your mind, body, and spirit. The highly recommended full-body thermal mud wrap will cocoon you in ecstasy.
