In his first major initiative after assuming office, West Bengal Tourism Minister Dr. Shankar Ghosh convened a high-level consultative meeting with leading tourism and hospitality associations, setting the tone for what could be a significant policy shift in the state’s tourism strategy. The meeting brought together government officials, industry representatives and tourism stakeholders to discuss a shared vision for the future of Bengal tourism.
The Minister’s appointment has generated fresh expectations within the tourism sector, and his decision to engage directly with industry leaders within the first week of taking office has been widely viewed as a strong signal of intent. According to the Department of Tourism, the initiative has already helped build confidence among stakeholders and laid the foundation for a more structured partnership between the government and the tourism industry.
During the meeting, Dr. Ghosh outlined a vision that seeks to leverage West Bengal’s rich heritage, cultural diversity, natural landscapes and hospitality traditions to create world-class tourism experiences. He emphasised that tourism must emerge as a major engine of economic growth, employment generation, investment attraction and cultural preservation in the state.
To achieve this objective, the Minister announced five strategic priorities: converting tourism potential into measurable outcomes through policy reforms and infrastructure development; making tourism inclusive and accessible; repositioning the state through the proposed “Experience Bengal 2.0” branding initiative; improving regional and international connectivity; and strengthening collaboration among government agencies, investors, local communities and industry players.
Industry representatives responded positively, offering suggestions on destination marketing, infrastructure enhancement, skill development, sustainable tourism and investment promotion. Special attention was given to emerging segments such as river, heritage, adventure and medical tourism.
Among the key outcomes was a proposal to develop a comprehensive West Bengal Tourism Master Policy, alongside the establishment of a Special Tourism Facilitation Cell to fast-track tourism-related investments and projects. Tourism associations have also been invited to submit their long-term vision and recommendations to help shape the state’s future tourism roadmap.
The Minister’s early outreach and policy-driven approach suggest that tourism is likely to emerge as a priority sector under his leadership, with the government and industry now working together to position West Bengal among India’s foremost tourism destinations.
