In response to dwindling Indian tourist arrivals amidst strained diplomatic ties, the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) has unveiled a strategic plan to revitalize tourism by conducting roadshows across major cities in India.
The move follows a heated exchange between Maldivian officials and Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this year. The controversy erupted when several Maldivian figures made derogatory remarks after Prime Minister Modi likened Lakshadweep to the Maldives during his visit to the Union Territory.
MATATO, in a statement released after discussions with the Indian High Commissioner in Male on April 8, expressed its intention to collaborate closely with the Indian High Commission to boost tourism initiatives. The association outlined plans to launch a comprehensive roadshow campaign in key Indian cities and organize influencer and media familiarization trips to the Maldives in the coming months.
Highlighting the significance of the Indian market for Maldivian tourism, MATATO emphasized the importance of partnering with prominent travel associations and industry stakeholders across India to promote the Maldives as a premier travel destination.
Official data from the Maldives Ministry of Tourism revealed a substantial decline in Indian tourist arrivals following the diplomatic row. While Indians constituted the majority of tourists visiting the island nation in 2023, with over 2,09,198 visitors, the number plummeted in the wake of the tensions, pushing Indian tourists to the fifth position.
The deteriorating relationship between India and the Maldives has been exacerbated by the ascent of a pro-China President to power in November last year, further complicating bilateral ties.
With the tourism sector being a crucial driver of the Maldivian economy, MATATO’s proactive measures to rekindle ties with Indian tourists underscore the island nation’s commitment to restoring confidence and fostering stronger bilateral relations in the long term.
