Echor Hotels and Resorts: Offering high-quality Service, Comfort and Immersive Experiences

Echor Hotels and Resorts, a boutique hotel chain, is revolutionizing the hospitality landscape in the serene landscapes of Himachal Pradesh, India. Founded in 2019 by Manoj and Rahul Uppal, Echor emerged from a profound realization of a gap in the travel industry, particularly in the realm of hospitality standards in remote areas. With Himachal Pradesh being a globally renowned destination, the founders identified an opportunity to elevate the hospitality experience in the region, catering to travellers seeking authentic local encounters and immersive stays.

August 28, 2024

What inspired you to establish Echor Hotels and Resorts in 2019, and how did you identify the specific gap in the hospitality industry that you sought to address in Himachal Pradesh?

The inspiration to establish Echor Hotels and Resorts in 2019 came from a shared passion for offbeat travel and the desire to create meaningful, authentic experiences for travelers. We were captivated by the serene beauty of Himachal Pradesh during our visit to the remote village of Chitkul. It was there that we realised the potential of lesser-known destinations and the need for a hospitality brand that could seamlessly blend luxury with the natural charm of these locations.

We identified a specific gap in the hospitality industry—while mainstream destinations had plenty of luxury accommodations, offbeat and remote locations were often underserved. Travelers seeking solace in nature and unique cultural experiences were left with limited options that either lacked comfort or authenticity. Our goal with Echor was to fill this gap by offering boutique properties that provide high-quality service, comfort, and immersive experiences in some of India’s most beautiful yet less-travelled destinations. We wanted to create a brand that not only showcased the beauty of these places but also contributed to their sustainable development, preserving their natural and cultural heritage for future generations.

Echor Hotels and Resorts focuses on offering authentic local experiences. Can you share how you curate these experiences to ensure that they resonate with the unique culture and natural beauty of each location?

At Echor Hotels and Resorts, our mission is to immerse our guests in the essence of the destinations they visit. To curate authentic local experiences, we start by deeply understanding the unique culture, traditions, and natural beauty of each location. We collaborate closely with local communities, artisans, and experts to design experiences that reflect the true spirit of the region.

For example, we incorporate guided nature walks led by local naturalists, who share their knowledge of the flora and fauna specific to the area. We also organize cultural evenings where guests can enjoy traditional music, dance, and cuisine, often prepared with locally sourced ingredients. Additionally, we offer activities such as art workshops, village tours, and interactions with local artisans, allowing guests to gain firsthand insights into the region’s heritage.

Our approach ensures that each experience is not only enjoyable but also meaningful, fostering a deeper connection between our guests and the destination. By showcasing the richness of local culture and the beauty of the natural surroundings, we create memories that resonate long after the journey ends, while also supporting and promoting the local economy and preserving cultural traditions.

Luxury and comfort are at the core of Echor’s offerings. How do you balance these elements with the need to maintain an authentic and immersive environment in your properties, especially in remote areas?

Balancing luxury and comfort with authenticity is at the heart of what we do at Echor Hotels and Resorts. Our philosophy is that true luxury doesn’t have to come at the expense of an immersive, authentic experience. Instead, we believe these elements can complement each other to create something truly special, especially in remote areas.

When it comes to comfort, we ensure that our guests have access to all the modern amenities they expect from a luxury stay, such as plush bedding, high-end bathroom fixtures, and personalized service. However, we avoid over-commercialization and maintain the natural beauty of the surroundings. For example, our properties might feature large windows that offer stunning views of the landscape, or outdoor spaces where guests can connect with nature in a comfortable setting.

In terms of service, we train our staff to provide superior hospitality while also sharing the local culture and stories with our guests. This personal touch allows guests to enjoy a luxurious stay while also feeling a genuine connection to the place they’re visiting.

Himachal Pradesh is known for its stunning landscapes and cultural richness. How do you ensure that each Echor property reflects the essence of its surroundings while meeting the expectations of modern travelers?

Himachal Pradesh is indeed a treasure trove of natural beauty and cultural richness, and we consider it a privilege to operate our properties in such a magnificent region. At Echor, our approach is to immerse our properties in the essence of their surroundings, ensuring that they resonate with the local culture and landscapes while also meeting the needs of modern travelers.

To begin with, we select our property locations with great care, choosing sites that offer breathtaking views and a deep connection to the environment. Whether it’s a hillside retreat or a riverside property, each property is designed to blend seamlessly into the natural landscape, rather than disrupt it.

In essence, our goal is to create a harmonious blend of the traditional and the contemporary. We want our guests to feel the spirit of Himachal Pradesh in every aspect of their stay, from the moment they wake up to the sight of the majestic mountains to the time they retire in the comfort of their luxurious rooms. By doing so, we ensure that our properties are not just places to stay, but immersive experiences that leave a lasting impression.

As a relatively young brand, how has Echor Hotels and Resorts adapted to the challenges of the hospitality industry, particularly in remote regions, and what strategies have been key to your growth and success?

As a young brand, Echor Hotels and Resorts has faced its share of challenges, particularly in the remote regions where many of our properties are located. These areas present unique difficulties, from logistical hurdles to ensuring consistent quality of service in locations that may lack certain infrastructure. However, these challenges have also shaped our strategies and contributed to our growth and success.

One of our key strategies has been a deep commitment to understanding the local environment and community. Before we scout a property, we invest time in learning about the area, its people, and its specific needs. This allows us to not only select properties that are in harmony with their surroundings but also to build strong relationships with local stakeholders. These relationships are crucial in remote areas, where community support can make all the difference in overcoming challenges like supply chain issues or recruiting talent.

Adaptability has also been central to our approach. We recognize that operating in remote locations requires a different mindset and a willingness to be flexible. For instance, when it comes to sourcing materials or hiring staff, we often turn to local resources, which helps us to navigate logistical challenges while also fostering local employment and economic growth. Additionally, our focus on sustainable practices—such as minimizing waste and conserving energy—has not only been good for the environment but also helps us manage operational costs effectively in these regions.

Finally, our growth strategy has always been measured and deliberate. Rather than expanding rapidly, we focus on ensuring that each new property aligns with our brand values and maintains the high standards we have set. This careful approach to expansion has allowed us to scale our operations sustainably, even in challenging environments.

Looking ahead, what are your plans for expanding Echor Hotels and Resorts? Are there any upcoming projects or new destinations that you are particularly excited about?

Looking ahead, we have ambitious plans for expanding Echor Hotels and Resorts, driven by our vision of offering unique and immersive experiences in offbeat and unexplored destinations. We are particularly excited about our upcoming projects in Uttarakhand and Maharashtra. These areas are rich in natural beauty, making them perfect for our brand, which focuses on creating luxurious yet authentic stays that resonate with the local environment.
In addition to this, we are also exploring opportunities in Goa & Rajasthan. The unique landscape and biodiversity of these regions offer a different kind of escape, and we are excited to bring the Echor experience to this part of India. Each of these projects will emphasize sustainability, local engagement, and the creation of spaces that blend seamlessly with their surroundings.

As we continue to grow, our focus will remain on curating properties that stand out for their distinctiveness and quality. We’re not just adding numbers to our portfolio; we’re carefully selecting destinations that align with our brand ethos and that we believe will offer truly memorable experiences to our guests.
