From Rs 49.11 crore in 2020–21 to Rs 243.31 crore in 2023–24, the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation’s (TTDC) revenue has grown fivefold in just three years. Authorities credit the expansion to the state’s growing status as one of India’s top travel destinations. The state had consistent increases in both domestic and foreign visitor arrivals, according to a government statement. While domestic tourist visits increased from 218.58 million to 286 million within the same period, foreign tourist inflows jumped from 0.14 million in 2022 to 1.17 million in 2023. In 2024, there were 1.4 billion tourists worldwide, representing an 11% rise in tourism.
According to the release, Tamil Nadu’s varied tourism resources, which include UNESCO World Heritage sites like the Shore Temple in Mamallapuram, the Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur, and the Gangaikondacholapuram Temple, as well as natural landmarks like Ooty, Kodaikanal, Yercaud, and a 1,076-kilometre coastline, continue to attract tourists. Other noteworthy contributions have come from cultural festivals, including the International Balloon and Kite Festivals, the Mamallapuram Indian Dance Festival, and Jallikattu. Projects like the Keezhadi Museum, the restoration of Valluvar Kottam, the growth of the Hogenakkal Falls region, the improvements to Courtallam, Pichavaram, and Kanniyakumari, and the ongoing building of significant libraries in Madurai, Coimbatore, and Tiruchirappalli were emphasised in the release.
Among the several national and international honours that Tamil Nadu has received are the titles of “Best State for Spiritual Tourism” and “Best Tourism Villages”, which were given to Keezhadi and Melkalingampatti.
