Pemako Hotels- Redefining the Luxury Landscape of Bhutan

Pemako Hotels are a part of the Tashi Group, and their first property is the Pemako Thimphu after which they opened Pemako Punakha. Pemako Punakha is the first high-end Bhutanese-owned and operated property in the Punakha valley. It is a milestone in Bhutan's hospitality industry.Vishal Pradhan, Operations and Marketing Manager, Pemako Hotels shares more in a BOTT exclusive.

The idea behind Pemako.

Pemako is a home-grown luxury hospitality brand from Bhutan that is rooted in offering a unique experience connecting guests to the culture, heritage and the stunning beauty of Bhutan through our thoughtfully built hotels in Punakha and Thimphu. Both of our properties are set among natural surroundings and are infused with traditional Bhutanese essence which is reflected across in every aspect from our architectural designs to our culinary offerings. Our flagship hotel Pemako Punakha showcases the country’s culture through its distinctive designed spaces, delectable cuisine, warm hospitality and immersive experiences – seamlessly woven together for an invigorating luxury holiday. Pemako Thimphu, resembles a medieval fortress, showcasing Bhutan’s rich heritage while providing modern comforts. Pemako embodies the essence of Bhutan. It takes you on a journey that engages the senses and encourages guests to reflect and transform personally.

Transformative experiences that blend luxury with cultural and natural immersion

At Pemako, we have curated experiences which reflect every aspect of Bhutanese life, while engaging the senses and rejuvenating the body and soul. Both of our hotels invite guests to embark on a meaningful journey of self-discovery against the backdrop of the Himalayas. The signature arrival experience at Pemako Punakha is rather special, guests cross a suspension bridge that is complete with fluttering prayer flags over the Mo Chhu River. Guests can start their day with meditation sessions led by our resident monk, before going on guided visits to ancient monasteries and dzongs. Nature also plays an important role in our experiential offerings such as white water rafting adventures on the Mo Chhu River to peaceful nature walks where guest can spot rare birds like the White Bellied Herons. Our wellness experiences at the Lotus Realm Spa embrace age old practices and are driven by the traditional Sowa Rigpa philosophy – the traditional Bhutanese medicine and guided by the skilled touch of Dungtshos – traditional medicine doctors. The Bhutanese Hot Stone Bath, infused with five distinct healing herbs, exemplifies how we blend ancient traditions with contemporary comfort. At Pemako Punakha, the experience of hoisting prayer flags allows guests to express their intentions to the Himalayan winds. A hands-on cooking class further enhances their journey, as they learn to prepare dishes infused with aromatic spices and techniques passed down through generations, connecting them to Bhutan’s culinary traditions. At Pemako Thimphu, evenings are complete with cultural performances that deepen their appreciation of Bhutan’s rich heritage. Guests can also participate in traditional Bhutanese archery and khuru, building a connection with the nation’s cherished sport.

Pemako USP and key differentiators

What sets Pemako apart is our thoughtful integration of luxury with authentic Bhutanese elements.  Pemako Punakha is spread across 60 acres along with Mo Chhu River, and our 21 villas that start at 290 square meters, feature private temperate-controlled pools and expansive decks that enhance the connection with nature. Conceptually designed by Bill Bensley, every detail reflects Bhutan’s essence while incorporating local craftsmanship with materials like Serge Ferrari fabrics and copper fixtures. Our spa, rooted in Sowa Rigpa offers a path to holistic well-being guided by a traditional medicine doctor and our culinary programme stands out with its farm to table approach, featuring multiple venues. Guests can also engage in a variety of activities, including Buddhism talks, prayer ceremonies, cooking classes, birdwatching, riverside picnics, and more, making Pemako Punakha a destination in itself.

Pemako’s urban sanctuary in Thimphu is designed to reflect the grandeur of a modern dzong, blending traditional Bhutanese architectural elements with contemporary comforts. The property also offers a wide range of room categories and event spaces suited for both intimate retreats and large-scale gatherings, all with views of the surrounding hills. Both of our properties show our commitment to exceptional service, with dedicated butlers ensuring a seamless and personalised guest experience. As the first locally owned premium hospitality brand, backed by the Tashi Group of Companies, Pemako delivers an authentic Bhutanese experience.

Importance of the India Market

India has emerged as the leading source market for arrivals in Bhutan. We have observed a growing interest among well-heeled Indian travellers in experiential travel, especially in luxury boutique accommodation like ours. This year, as a part of our marketing strategies, in collaboration with BRANDit, we will focus on partnerships with travel agents to implement joint marketing initiatives. Through these industry experts, we aim to broaden our reach and showcase the unique offerings of our properties.

Tailoring the offerings for the India market

Alongside BRANDit, we have closely analysed travel motivators or patters within the Indian market, considering key factors like festive getaways, summer holidays, the upcoming honeymoon period, anniversary and milestone getaways. Based on these insights, we design packages to align with the preferences and travel trends of Indian travellers, ensuring that our offerings resonate with their needs.

Growth/Expansion and plans

We might be looking at Paro as our next destination.
