The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a travel advisory with helpline numbers for Indians residing in Nepal on September 9, 2025, in response to the violence in the country. Indians in Nepal were asked by the MEA to postpone their trip till the situation had calmed.
According to the Ministry’s recommendation, “Indian citizens currently in Nepal are advised to shelter in their current places of residence, avoid going out onto the streets, and exercise all due caution.” The Ministry requested that they abide by the local safety recommendations issued by the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu and the Nepali authorities.
“If you need any help, please contact the Embassy of India in Kathmandu at 977-980 860 2881 or 977-981 032 6134,” MEA’s statement stated. September 9, 2025, saw the resignation of Nepal Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli after protests led by Generation Z intensified for the second day in a row in Kathmandu and other regions of the nation.
Following the deaths of 19 people, primarily young, on September 8, when police opened fire with rubber bullets and live ammunition during protests organised by Nepal’s youth calling for an end to corruption, nepotism, favouritism, and misgovernance, pressure has been building for Mr Oli to resign. Up to 400 people were reportedly hurt. India has expressed its deep sadness at the deaths of numerous young people during the protests in Nepal and its hope that a peaceful solution can be found to the problems.
In the midst of the anti-government demonstrations, Air India, IndiGo, and Nepal Airlines cancelled their flights from Delhi to Kathmandu on September 9.
