India has remained a key pillar of Maldivian’s regional network and growth strategy since the airline began operations to the country in 2008. Today, Maldivian operates five weekly flights each to Thiruvananthapuram and Cochin, strengthening connectivity between the Maldives and southern India.
Over the years, these routes have played a significant role in supporting tourism, trade, education and medical travel between the two neighbouring countries. The airline’s services have also contributed to closer people-to-people ties and improved access to essential markets.
To commemorate the milestone, Maldivian organised a special event attended by key stakeholders, business partners and team members. The occasion reflected on the airline’s journey in India and recognised the contributions of those who have supported its growth over the years.
As part of the celebration, Maldivian honoured long-serving employees and valued partners with commemorative awards, acknowledging their dedication, loyalty and continued support throughout the airline’s 18-year journey in the Indian market.
Speaking on the occasion, Ibrahim Iyas, Managing Director of Maldivian, said, “India has been an integral part of Maldivian’s international journey for the past 18 years. This milestone is not only a celebration of our operations, but also a tribute to the dedicated staff, trusted partners and loyal customers who have supported us throughout the years. We remain committed to strengthening this important market and further enhancing connectivity between the Maldives and India.”
Maldivian’s continued expansion in India underlines the importance of the market to the airline’s broader vision of enhancing regional connectivity. In addition to its services to India, the airline provides onward connections across the Maldives through its extensive domestic and seaplane network, linking Indian travellers to resort islands, local communities, business hubs and remote destinations.
With the largest domestic network in the Maldives, Maldivian currently operates a fleet of 26 aircraft, comprising an Airbus A330-200, an Airbus A320, five ATR aircraft, eight Dash 8 aircraft and eleven DHC-6 Twin Otters.
The airline serves a growing number of international destinations, including India, Bangladesh and China, while continuing to strengthen its role in connecting the Maldives with key markets across the region.
