Madhya Pradesh presents limitless opportunities and vast potential for tourism investment

Madhya Pradesh, with its rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and commitment to sustainable tourism development, is rapidly emerging as one of India’s most promising destinations for investment in the tourism and hospitality sector. The state’s growing tourism potential has caught the attention of investors and industry leaders, especially during the recent Global Investors Summit (GIS), where major investment proposals worth ₹4,468 crore were announced in the tourism and hospitality sectors.

A Vision for the Future

Madhya Pradesh is poised to become a key player in India’s tourism industry, with both the Union and State Governments working in tandem to unlock the state’s vast potential. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, while addressing the Tourism Summit at GIS, highlighted the critical role tourism plays in Madhya Pradesh’s future development. He emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen tourism infrastructure, improve connectivity, and enhance the overall experience for visitors. The state’s continued focus on expanding tourism projects, bolstering air services, and providing innovative solutions like free ambulance services for Ayushman Card holders underlines its commitment to both tourism and public welfare.

The Tourism and Hospitality Sector Booms

Madhya Pradesh’s diverse offerings, from wildlife safaris to cultural heritage sites, have made it a prime destination for both domestic and international tourists. Union Tourism Minister Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, speaking at the summit, remarked that the tourism sector in India, especially in Madhya Pradesh, will be a significant contributor to the country’s GDP by 2047, with tourism projected to exceed 10% of India’s GDP. The rising number of domestic tourists, spurred by increased spending capacity and the government’s tax relief measures, further underscores the growing potential of the state’s tourism industry.

Shri Shekhawat also highlighted the prime opportunities in the state’s tourism sector, inviting investors to explore the vast possibilities Madhya Pradesh offers. His words, “If I were not in politics, I would have been in the tourism business,” reflect his firm belief in the state’s potential to thrive as a tourism powerhouse.

Unique Natural Beauty and Wildlife Tourism

Madhya Pradesh is a treasure trove of wildlife and natural wonders, attracting eco-tourists and nature enthusiasts from around the world. From the iconic tigers of Kanha and Bandhavgarh to the recently reintroduced cheetahs in Sheopur, the state offers an unparalleled wildlife experience. The government’s initiatives, such as the growing number of tiger reserves, demonstrate its commitment to preserving its rich biodiversity while promoting sustainable tourism.

In addition to wildlife, the state’s commitment to environmental conservation and the coexistence of human settlements and wildlife further sets it apart. The sight of tigers roaming near Bhopal’s urban areas and cheetahs near villages in Sheopur is a testament to the harmony between development and preservation.

Investment Proposals and Infrastructure Development

During the GIS, Madhya Pradesh secured a staggering ₹4,468 crore in investment proposals aimed at diversifying and strengthening its tourism infrastructure. These investments span across a variety of sectors, including cruise tourism, film production, luxury resorts, and adventure tourism. Notable proposals include:

  • Ayodhya Cruise Lines: ₹70 crore investment in cruise tourism projects.
  • Indian Hotels Company Ltd. (IHCL): ₹1,960 crore for new hospitality units across national parks and cities like Indore and Ujjain.
  • Treasure Group: ₹600 crore investment in ultra-mega projects, including luxury resorts near Khajuraho and Sanchi.
  • Amazon Prime, Zee5, Hollywood Projects: ₹300 crore for film production.
  • Imagica World Entertainment Ltd.: ₹200 crore for a water park near Indore.

These investments aim to expand and enhance Madhya Pradesh’s tourism infrastructure, creating a diverse array of attractions for all types of travelers.

MoUs to Enhance Tourism Facilities

As part of the summit, six significant Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed to drive forward various tourism initiatives in the state. These MoUs are focused on improving safety, cleanliness, and overall tourism infrastructure, as well as creating job opportunities and promoting sustainable practices. Some of the key MoUs include:

  • MakeMyTrip: Development of ‘Pink Toilets’ in Orchha to enhance facilities for women travelers.
  • IndiaHikes: Development of new trekking routes and promotion of adventure tourism.
  • Alchemy Cruise Lines: Expansion of cruise tourism along the Narmada River.
  • IndiGo Airlines: Tourism development at Gwalior Fort.
  • UN Women: Promoting gender equality through workshops and awareness programs at key tourist destinations.

These agreements reflect the government’s proactive approach to improving the tourism experience, enhancing safety, and promoting inclusive growth.

Madhya Pradesh: A Destination for Film Tourism

Madhya Pradesh’s unique blend of natural beauty, heritage, and cultural richness has made it an increasingly popular choice for film production. Actor Shri Pankaj Tripathi, who has worked in the state on multiple film projects, emphasized the importance of authentic locations in filmmaking. He shared how filming in towns like Chanderi not only boosted the local economy but also brought attention to the region’s scenic beauty and cultural charm. Madhya Pradesh is rapidly becoming a preferred location for filmmakers, and with state policies like the Film Tourism Policy 2025, the government is actively fostering the growth of this sector.

Sustainable and Inclusive Tourism

Madhya Pradesh is committed to promoting sustainable and inclusive tourism. The state’s tourism policy prioritizes low-volume, high-value tourism, focusing on offering tranquil destinations for rejuvenation and authentic experiences through rural homestays. The state also emphasizes the preservation of its culture, wildlife, and heritage, making it a model for sustainable tourism development.

The government’s efforts to streamline tourism processes, such as implementing single-window clearance for investors and introducing policies like EODF (Ease of Doing Films), are aimed at attracting discerning travelers and investors while minimizing bureaucracy.
