How important is the India market to you?
India has now become the number one source market for arrivals into Sri Lanka and will be the major contributor to the predicted number of arrivals i.e. 2.5 million arrivals into the country this year. This surge can easily be pinned on the increase in disposable income among Indians which has led to a rise in leisure travel trends. We’ve observed that there’s a significant number of well-heeled Indians who are seeking experiential travel experiences, including staying at boutique properties and immersing themselves in the culture of the region. Even as multi-generational and milestone getaways gain popularity, we’re expecting a rise in demand for boutique properties, given the proximity and connectivity from India.
What is the USP of your hotel brand?
Each of our hotels, have their own story just waiting to be told while giving you a peek into Sri Lanka’s rich history, diversity, and legendary hospitality. We set ourselves apart by carefully selecting and restoring centuries-old heritage buildings and vintage tea bungalows into contemporary homes, all while maintaining their original charm. The team also curates some immersive local experiences that can only be done with us. With sustainability as one of our core values, each of our properties is thoughtfully designed to give travellers an experience that reflects the different regions they are in.
Do you have any plans for expansion?
Absolutely, expansion is on our radar. We’re constantly scouting for new and exciting opportunities to expand our portfolio of properties across Sri Lanka. Our goal is to discover hidden gems in different regions of the country and bring them to life, showcasing the best of what Sri Lanka has to offer in terms of hospitality and unique experiences.
Tell us something about the F&B offerings.
In recent years, we’ve noticed a growing trend among Indian travellers who are eager to explore and indulge in local cuisine during their journeys. How important is the MICE and Wedding segment?
While our primary emphasis is on providing tailored experiences for discerning travellers through our boutique properties, we also cater to intimate weddings of 100 pax at our larger-than-life venues. Additionally, we’ve observed more Indians choosing our hotels for small milestone celebrations.
What measures are being taken from the point of view of sustainability?
Sustainability and community have always been an integral part of Teardrop Hotels. We are committed to making a positive impact in every aspect of our operations. From the careful restoration of historic homes to transforming those into a contemporary blend of old and new, we strive to preserve the past while embracing the future. We also support local farmers, fishermen and artisans while taking care of the community and the environment. Additionally, our staff is actively involved in our charitable foundation, CARE that stands for ‘Creating a Rewarding Experience’, which empowers local communities through initiatives such as providing essential resources to low-income families, empower impoverished young people from the tea estates through education, employment, and ethnic cohesion, educating young eco-warriors on sustainability, wildlife conservation, reforestation, and biodiversity.
