Of these, around 46,000 were stopover visitors and 30,000 cruise passengers. Since Hurricane Melissa, the island has welcomed 370,000 visitors, generating USD 331.2 million in earnings. The government continues to support tourism workers through relief programmes, including housing assistance and livelihood stabilisation initiatives.
Sikkim Tourism surges to record levels, strains destinations
Sikkim’s tourism sector has hit unprecedented heights in 2025, with visitor arrivals surpassing pre-pandemic figures and projected to reach 17–18 lakh by year-end. Popular spots like MG Marg in Gangtok and North Sikkim valleys are grappling with heavy crowds, traffic snarls and full hotels, once seen only during peak festivals. While the boom has revived the economy after COVID and flood setbacks, locals and officials warn of overtourism pressures on infrastructure and fragile mountain environments.
