House of Wisdom
House of Wisdom, an advanced library and cultural center, was inaugurated as part of the celebrations for Sharjah being named as the UNESCO World Book Capital of 2019. It aims to ignite the development of a fresh cultural district within the emirate. Boasting an impressive collection of over 100,000 books, this two-story library is located adjacent to “The Scroll,” a public artwork crafted by British sculptor Gerry Judah. Situated near University City on the Sharjah International Airport Road, the building is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens.
The House of Wisdom plays a crucial role in redefining the function of libraries in future community life. It goes beyond being mere repositories for books and literature, and instead serves as a dynamic social center for learning, supported by innovation and technology. The library offers a multitude of amenities, including thousands of physical and digital books, exhibition spaces, a Fabrication Lab, Print-on-demand book stations, Discussion halls, and much more.
Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization
The Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization consists of seven galleries spread across two levels. On the ground floor, you can explore exhibits that delve into various aspects of the Islamic faith and highlight the accomplishments of Arab scientists and astronomers. On the upper floors, you’ll find a comprehensive chronological display of Islamic arts and crafts, encompassing textiles, jewellery, and more. Housed in building every bit as impressive as its collection, the museum is located on the Corniche, just north of the Heart of Sharjah district.
Sharjah Calligraphy Museum
The only museum in the Arab world dedicated entirely to the art of calligraphy, the Sharjah Calligraphy Museum is set around a light-filled, covered courtyard. This museum delves into the rich history of calligraphy, showcasing its evolution from early Kufic scripts to graceful and flowing styles. Through its exhibits, the museum pays homage to the timeless Islamic art form. Within its collection, you’ll find notable pieces crafted by both local and acclaimed international calligraphers, spanning various mediums such as canvas, wood, paper, and ceramic. If you’re feeling inspired, you can even participate in a workshop to cultivate your own calligraphy skills.
Sharjah Mosque
The largest mosque in Sharjah was inaugurated in 2019 after more than five years in the making. Spanning 185,806 square meters and costing Dh300 million (approx. 80 million USD), this impressive building can house a capacity of over 25,000 worshippers. Serving as a steadfast symbol of devotion, this mosque is certainly worth a visit to witness its magnificence.
Surrounded by enchanting gardens and adorned with water fountains, the domes, minarets, and columns showcase a distinctive Islamic architectural style. The main prayer hall features arched windows embellished with stained glass, walls adorned with Quranic verses, a prominent central chandelier, and a red carpet covering the floor.
Sharjah Heritage Museum
Located within a meticulously renovated 18th-century residence of a pearl merchant, the Sharjah Heritage Museum delves into various facets of Emirati culture, encompassing religious customs and desert living. Its six galleries comprehensively showcase the emirate’s landscape, lifestyle, celebrations, livelihoods, traditional wisdom, and oral traditions.
