India’s wildlife and spiritual heritage have long drawn global travellers, but the true frontier of inbound growth for the nation lies in depth, authenticity, and seamless access. In states such as Madhya Pradesh, the travel narrative is shifting beyond well-known circuits toward immersive eco-tourism, community-led initiatives, local gastronomy, and lesser-known regional traditions, giving international visitors a compelling reason to stay longer and explore deeper.
Transforming raw experiential potential into sustained tourism growth hinges on a single critical factor of accessibility. From boosting direct international flights to strengthening regional links between emerging circuits, making India easier to navigate remains the ultimate catalyst for competitiveness. In an interview with BOTT, Mahendra Pratap Singh, Chairman, IATO Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh Chapter and Managing Director, Travel India Tourism & MP Tours discusses what it takes to elevate regional stories into market-ready itineraries, and why strategic connectivity is the master key to unlocking India’s full tourism potential.
From your Chapter’s perspective, what are the strongest tourism experiences and emerging opportunities in your region that can attract more international travellers, and what needs to be done to unlock their full potential?
Madhya Pradesh has always had a strong tourism base, with its heritage, wildlife, spirituality, tribal traditions, and rural experiences. What is interesting now is the opportunity to present these more experientially. Eco-tourism, community-based experiences, local food and crafts, and lesser-known destinations can add considerable depth to the existing circuits. We have seen strong interest when overseas operators have the opportunity to experience these products themselves through FAM programmes and trade interactions. The next step is to improve connectivity and visitor facilities, develop these experiences into well-planned itineraries and take them consistently to the right markets. This can encourage international visitors to look beyond the established destinations and spend more time in the state.
What is the most important intervention India needs today to accelerate inbound tourism growth and strengthen its competitiveness as a global destination?
I would put connectivity high on that list. India has the destinations and experiences, but reaching many of them still takes considerable time, particularly for international visitors. More direct international flights, stronger regional air links and better connections between tourism circuits would make a significant difference. Easier movement means travellers can cover more destinations in one trip, stay longer and consider places that may currently be difficult to include in an itinerary. For inbound tourism, making India easier to reach and navigate can directly impact growth.
