Meghalaya has expanded its homestay development programme as part of efforts to strengthen tourism infrastructure and create local employment opportunities. The initiative comes amid rising tourist arrivals, which have grown from around 1.2 million in 2018 to over 1.6 million. Meghalaya is also targeting 2.1 million annual visitors by 2028.
